All Quiet on the Western Front - Trailer [1930] [3rd Oscar Best Picture]

posted by guitar man 128 days ago

This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality. Written by Michele Wilkinson [IMDB.COM] Release: 24 August 1930 Running Time: 133 min Awards: Won 2 Oscars. Another 3 wins & 2 nominations AFI Recognition: 100 YEARS100 STARS #54 Producer: Carl Laemmle Jr. Director: Lewis Milestone Writer: George Abbott Cast: Louis Wolheim (Kat [Katczinsky]), Lew Ayres (Paul [Bäumer]), John Wray (Himmelstoss), Arnold Lucy (Kantorek), Ben Alexander (Kemmerich) Genre: Action, Drama, War [AFI.COM][IMDB.COM][BOXOFFICEMOJO.COM]

The Manhattan Melodrama movie trailer for the 1934 film starring Clark Gable, William Powell and Myrna Loy. The movie tells the story of two friends, both orphans, who grow up on opposite sides of the law and fall in love with the same woman. The film is perhaps best known as the movie that John Dillinger watched on the night that he died, before being shot dead by the FBI after he left the movie theater.

Mutiny on the Bounty - Trailer [1935] [8th Oscar Best Picture]

posted by guitar man 128 days ago

The Bounty sails from Britain for Tahiti to obtain a cargo of breadfruit plants. Captain Bligh is in charge and he over-zealously enforces discipline by various methods, his favorite being flogging. Bligh cuts rations and works his men so hard that even first mate Fletcher Christian finds him hard to comprehend. In Tahiti, Christian and good friend midshipman Byam become involved with native women Maimiti and Tehanni. Tahiti is paradise compared to life on the Bounty under Bligh. When the Bounty is loaded and sets sail to return, the harsh treatment by their Captain is too much for the crew and Christian leads a mutiny. They set Bligh and his supporters adrift on a boat and return the Bounty to Tahiti. What they did not count on is the Captain's return.
