 | Judgment At Nuremberg - Original Trailer 1961
posted by guitar man 128 days ago
After the end of World War II, the world
gradually became aware of the full extent
of the war crimes perpetrated by the Third
Reich. In 1948, a series of trials were
held in Nuremberg, Germany, by an
international tribunal, headed by American
legal and military officials, with the
intent of bringing to justice those guilty
of crimes against humanity. However, by
that time most of the major figures of the
Nazi regime were either dead or long
missing, and in the resulting legal
proceedings American judges often found
themselves confronting the question of how
much responsibility someone held who had
"just followed orders." Judgment at
Nuremberg is a dramatized version of the
proceedings at one of these trials, in
which Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) is
overseeing the trials of four German
judges -- most notably Dr. Ernst Janning
(Burt Lancaster) and Emil Hahn (Werner
Klemperer) -- accused of knowingly
sentencing innocent men to death in
collusion with the Nazis. Representing the
defense is attorney Hans Rolfe (Maximilian
Schell), while prosecuting the accused is
U.S. Col. Tad Lawson (Richard Widmark). As
the trial goes on, both the visiting
Americans and their reluctant German hosts
often find themselves facing the legacy of
the war, and how both of their nations
have been irrevocably changed by it.
Judgment at Nuremberg also features
notable supporting performances by Marlene
Dietrich, Judy Garland, and Montgomery
Clift. Originally written and produced as
a play for television, the screen version
of Judgment at Nuremberg was nominated for
11 Academy Awards, with Maximilian Schell
and Abby Mann taking home Oscars for
(respectively) Best Actor and Best Adapted
Screenplay.

 | To Kill A Mockingbird - Original Trailer 1962
posted by guitar man 128 days ago
 Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning
autobiographical novel was translated to
film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the
producer/director team of Robert Mulligan
and Alan J. Pakula. Set a small Alabama
town in the 1930s, the story focuses on
scrupulously honest, highly respected
lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently
embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his
career on the line when he agrees to
represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a
black man accused of rape. The trial and
the events surrounding it are seen through
the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter
Scout (Mary Badham). While Robinson's
trial gives the film its momentum, there
are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before
and after the court date: Scout's
ever-strengthening bond with older brother
Jem (Philip Alford), her friendship with
precocious young Dill Harris (a character
based on Lee's childhood chum Truman
Capote and played by John Megna), her
father's no-nonsense reactions to such
life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad
dog, and especially Scout's reactions to,
and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert
Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive
"village idiot" who turns out to be her
salvation when she is attacked by a
venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won
Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best
Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art
Direction.

 | Lawrence of Arabia - Trailer [1962] [35th Oscar Best Picture]
posted by guitar man 128 days ago
An inordinately complex man who has been
labeled everything from hero, to
charlatan, to sadist, Thomas Edward
Lawrence blazed his way to glory in the
Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a
common soldier under an assumed name. The
story opens with the death of Lawrence in
a motorcycle accident in London at the age
of 47, then flashbacks to recount his
adventures: as a young intelligence
officer in Cairo in 1916, he is given
leave to investigate the progress of the
Arab revolt against the Turks in World War
I. In the desert, he organizes a guerrilla
army and--for two years--leads the Arabs
in harassing the Turks with desert raids,
train-wrecking and camel attacks.
Eventually, he leads his army northward
and helps a British General destroy the
power of the Ottoman Empire. Written by
