 | Wings Of Desire - Original Trailer 1987
posted by guitar man 22 days ago
Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto
Sander) are angels who watch over the city
of Berlin. They don't have harps or wings
(well, they usually don't have wings) and
they prefer overcoats to gossamer gowns.
But they can travel unseen through the
city, listening to people's thoughts,
watching their actions and studying their
lives. While they can make their presence
felt in small ways, only children and
other angels can see them. They spend
their days serenely observing, unable to
interact with people, and they feel
neither pain nor joy. One day, Damiel
finds his way into a circus and sees
Marion (Solveig Dommartin), a high-wire
artist, practicing her act; he is
immediately smitten. After the owners of
the circus tell the company that the show
is out of money and must disband, Marion
sinks into a funk, shuffling back to her
trailer to ponder what to do next. As he
watches her, Damiel makes a decision: he
wants to be human, and he wants to be with
Marion, to lift her spirits and, if need
be, to share her pain. Wim Wenders' Wings
of Desire is a remarkable modern fairy
tale about the nature of being alive. The
angels witness the gamut of human
emotions, and they experience the luxury
of simple pleasures (even a cup of coffee
and a cigarette) as ones who've never
known them. From the angels' viewpoint,
Berlin is seen in gorgeous black-and-white
-- strikingly beautiful but unreal; when
they join the humans, the image shifts to
rough but natural-looking color, and the
waltz-like grace of the angels' drift
through the city changes to a harsher
rhythm. Peter Falk appears as himself,
revealing a secret that we may not have
known about the man who played Columbo,
and there's also a brief but powerful
appearance by Nick Cave & the Bad
Seeds. Wings of Desire hinges on the
intangible and elusive, and it builds
something beautiful from those qualities.

 | Andrei Rublev (English subtitles). Part 16 of 20.
posted by guitar man 113 days ago
Andrei Rublev / The Passion According to
Andrei (English subtitles). Part 16 of
20.
Andrei Rublev is set against the
background of 15th century Russia.
Although the film is only loosely based on
the life of Andrei Rublev, its depiction
of medieval Russia is realistic. Tarkovsky
created a film that shows the artist as "a
world-historic figure" and "Christianity
as an axiom of Russias historical
identity"[1] during a turbulent period of
Russian history, that ultimately resulted
in the Tsardom of Russia. The film is
about the essence of art and the
importance of faith and shows an artist
who tries to find the appropriate response
to the tragedies of his time. The film is
also about artistic freedom and the
possibility and necessity of making art
for, and in the face of, a repressive
authority and its hypocrisy, technology
and empiricism, by which knowledge is
acquired on one's own without reliance on
authority, and the role of the individual,
communnity, and government in the making
of both spiritual and epic art.
Because of the films's religious themes
and political ambiguity, it was unreleased
in the atheistic and authoritarian Soviet
Union for years after it was completed,
except for a single screening in Moscow. A
cut version of the film was shown at the
Cannes Film Festival in 1969, where it won
the FIPRESCI prize. In 1971 a censored
version of the film released in the Soviet
Union. The film was further cut for
commercial reasons upon release in the US
in 1973. Because of this several versions
of the film exist. Today Andrei Rublev is
widely regarded as a masterpiece and one
of Tarkovsky's best works.
By opinion poll of the members of the
European Academy of Film and Television
(1995), this motion picture was recognized
one of the worlds ten best films (8th
place).

One of the most scathing indictments of
American culture ever produced by a
Hollywood filmmaker, Academy Award-winner
Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole is
legendary for both its cutting social
critique and its status as a hard-to-find
cult classic. Kirk Douglas gives the
fiercest performance of his career as
Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter
caught in dead-end Albuquerque who happens
upon the story of a lifetime-and will do
anything to ensure he gets the scoop.
Wilder's follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is
an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred
expose that anticipated the rise of the
American media circus.

 Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's
much-lauded epic Life and Death of Colonel
Blimp, which satirizes British
traditionalism, stirred up impassioned
hostilities and indignations among the
Brits when released in 1943. It so
infuriated Winston Churchill, in fact,
that he refused to allow its exportation
to other countries, particularly the U.S.
When Blimp finally did premiere in the
States in 1945, it screened in a
drastically cut version. The sweeping
story covers several decades. It begins at
the tail end of the Boer War, when
handsome young British officer Clive
Candy, recently back from the battlefront,
is infuriated by his discovery that
Deutschland papers have played up the
British atrocities in South Africa,
propagandistically. He grows so irate, in
fact, that he travels to Germany to
address the problem.

Synopsis!
"Written on the Wind" is a 1956 American
drama film directed by Douglas Sirk. The
screenplay by George Zuckerman was based
on Robert Wilder's 1945 novel of the same
name, a thinly disguised account of the
real-life scandal involving torch singer
Libby Holman and her husband, tobacco heir
Zachary Smith Reynolds. Zuckerman shifted
the locale from North Carolina to Texas,
made the source of the family wealth oil
rather than tobacco, and changed all the
character names.
Plot!
Self-destructive dipso-nymphomaniac
Marylee (Malone) and her insecure
alcoholic brother Kyle (Stack) are the
offspring of Texas oil baron Jasper Hadley
(Robert Keith). Spoiled by their inherited
wealth and crippled by their personal
demons, neither is able to sustain a
successful personal relationship.
Problems ensue when Kyle's impulsive
marriage to New York City executive
secretary Lucy Moore (Bacall) begins to
crumble and his childhood friend, and
Marylee's long-time infatuation, Mitch
Wayne (Hudson), a Hadley Oil geologist,
becomes involved with their problems.
Kyle, diagnosed with a low sperm count,
physically assaults Lucy when she
announces her pregnancy, as he wrongly
assumes her adultery with Mitch, who
orders Kyle out of the house. Lucy's fall
results in a miscarriage, and Mitch
promises to leave town with her as soon as
she's well enough to travel. On his
return, a drunken Kyle recovers a pistol
hidden by Mitch and aims the gun at him.
Marylee struggles with her brother for the
weapon, but it accidentally fires, killing
him.
Repeatedly spurned by the man she claims
to love, a spiteful Marylee threatens to
implicate Mitch in Kyle's death. At the
inquest, she first testifies he killed her
sibling, then tearfully redeems herself by
admitting the truth. Mitch and Lucy
depart, leaving Marylee to mourn the death
of her brother and her broken dream.
