Whitechapel was shown over here over three hourly instalments (that ended on Monday). It tells the story of a new (rather posh) Detective Inspector (Rupert Penry-Jones) who is sent to Whitechapel to deal with a 'routine domestic' incident only to discover that they are actually dealing with a Jack The Ripper copycat who is killing women in exactly the same way..(and on the exact same time and dates..) as the original Ripper!
Phil Davis is brilliant as the street wise 'old hand' Detective Sergeant who has to deal with the new DI and The League of Gentleman's Steve Pemberton co stars as a Ripperologist trying to help. Just released on DVD it's well worth a look. Quite gory in parts too...

even on baker street? btw i heard a rumor that Jack the Ripper was theorized to be part of the Masons. Something about a scandal that a prostitute was carrying the child of a king so the king had the mason kill all the prostitutes... It's not necessarily something i believe...but its a good story

What? Don't eat the eggs. We put LSD in the eggs. And the water. I put LSD in the main water tank. What? But, we drank the water! Yeah! |

Theres tons of speculation around who Jack was. James Maybrick, who wrote the supposed Ripper diary was a freemason back in 1888/1889 when the murders were committed. Its a really fascinating story.

For a while The Duke of Clarence (Queen Victoria's grandson) was in the frame as The Ripper..the theory being he used to like 'slumming it' with common prostitutes and word got out so they were all silenced to save the reputation of a member of the Royal family. The only drawback was that The Duke of Clarence was very much gay and frequented a gay brothel in Cleveland Street..(which is fairly close to Baker Street)..he was also out of the country for at least two of the murders. The Queen's Surgeon, Dr Bell was also in the frame as well..that's where the Masonic connection comes in..the theory being that he was destroying evidence that a member of the Royal family had perhaps impregnated a prostitute (this is the theory followed in ' In Hell', the Johnny Depp Ripper flick based on Alan Moore's graphic novel) But again..the Royal in question was the Duke of Clarence..so it all falls apart. Baker Street is miles away from Whitchapel..the other side of London. Jack concentrated his activities to the area of Whitechapel which is in the East End. There weren't any Ripper murders in west London.
