A young teenage actor (Zac Efron) lucks his way into being cast by a young Orson Welles (Christian McKay) in his legendary 1937 Mercury Theater production of "Julius Ceasar". The story is over a 7 day period,,,,,,with some fiction....leading up to opening night. Most of the film takes place backstage, including a romantic sub-plot (Claire Danes).
This film belongs to newcomer Christian McKay who offers a perfect pitch performance of Orson Welles. A compelling and nicely constructed look at what it takes to put on a stage production, with egotistical performers, and remarkable acting. Surprised with Zac Efron who offers a competent performance. The film is not a biopic, since it's a few years before "Citizen Kane" and "War of the Worlds", etc. A recommended film for all theater lovers, educated movie fans of classic cinema or just being entertained. Film B+ Christian McKay A+ |

Oh, it's on at the Quad in January; will get to see it. My cold has been so bad I haven't been able to go to the cinema for ages because of coughing all the time which means I didn't get to see Bright Star, and I was so looking forward to it.

Gosh; it's out on dvd pretty quickly..at least I won't have to wait long to see it. However, now that my hacking cough is on the mend the 'Significant Other' has caught it, so seeing The White Ribbon, Seraphine and Morris, a Life with Bells On has been put in jeopardy.

Finally got round to watching it last night, and, have to say found it rather lightweight and boring. Not helped by the fact that I watched Nowhere Boy the night before, which was perfection. At least I know who Zac Efron is now.
