They didn't get renewed. They had originally planned on making one or two 2-hour specials/"movies".... there was some waffling back and forth. They were going to do it, then they weren't, then they were, then they weren't. They finally decided they would do it, but the entire set had been taken down and it would've been too expensive to rebuild I guess.... Ian McShane was quite p*ssed off about it.

They were planning to make two TV-movies to follow it up, but they ended up scrapping them as costing too much, or they couldn't sign the actors (most of whose careers took off after this) or something. That's a shame, because historically the Gem burned down two years after the show's setting, and that would have been a great set-piece to build the finale around.

Edit: Ah, Dustin, you beat me to it. That's what I get for not noticing there was a second page of comments.
