I hate to be a wet blanket, but we are losing sight of what a Cult moive is.

A cult film (also known as a cult movie/picture or a cult classic) is a film that has acquired a highly devoted but specific group of fans. Often, cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of the small fanbases; however, there have been exceptions that have managed to gain fame among mainstream audiences. Many cult movies have gone on to transcend their original cult status and have become recognized as classics; others are of the "so bad it's good" variety and are destined to remain in obscurity. Cult films often become the source of a thriving, obsessive, and elaborate subculture of fandom, hence the analogy to cults. However, not every film with a rabid fanbase is necessarily a cult film. Usually, cult films have limited but very special, noted appeal. Cult films are often known to be eccentric and do not follow traditional standards of mainstream cinema and usually explore topics not considered in any way mainstream—yet there are examples that are relatively normal. They are often considered controversial because they step outside standard narrative and technical conventions known.

A cult film is a movie that attracts a devoted group of followers or obsessive fans, despite having failed on its initial release. The term also describes films that have remained popular over a long period of time amongst a small group of followers. In many cases, cult films may have failed to achieve mainstream success on original release although this is definitely not always the case. Whilst they may only have a short cinema release cult films often enjoy ongoing popularity due to myriad VHS, LaserDisc and DVD releases. In some cases, these films tend to enjoy long runs on video, thus being issued in video "runs" with more copies than other movies. The box office bomb Office Space (1999) managed to financially redeem itself when word-of-mouth made it a popular video rental. Harold and Maude (1971) was not successful financially at the time of its original release in 1971, but has since nevertheless earned a huge cult following and has become successful following its video and DVD releases. This has also happened with The Big Lebowski (1998), among others. Many cult films were independently made and were not expected by their creators to have much mainstream success. Carnival of Souls (1962), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Pink Flamingos (1972), Basket Case (1982), The Evil Dead (1981) and its sequels, and Eraserhead (1977) have all been commonly acknowledged as having become cult films. Sometimes the audience response to a cult film is somewhat different from what was intended by the film makers. Many films that become cult contain unusual elements. Cult films usually offer something different or innovative in comparison to more mainstream films but cult films can also be popular across a wide audience.

The American Astronaut, I loved it. It was written and directed by a member of a weird band called The Billy Nayer Show, I believe they said he has made 3 previous films but none of them obtained any recognition, this one hasn't either apparently but go see it anyways. If you haven't seen it imagine the most bizarre & abstract film you have seen and then I want you to think about what genre it was in. Is it in the sci-fi musical western comedy section?

The films plot centers around a sort of pacifist version of Han Solo, a space trader. He is floating around asteroids, goes to a bar for a dance contest and discovers a little scheme involving trading a few live, soon to be live & dead people with profit to be made. He obtains DNA that will turn into a girl. The ruler of Saturn needs a girl to raise to marry and will give a boy of ripe age who has seen a woman's breast. The women of Venus who only birth females, have one male responsible for the planets Y chromosome needs and he sadly, is dead, needing a replacement male of ripe age and possessing/giving a valuable corpse. The corpse is the previous lucky devil who's family on earth will pay highly for his body so he may be properly buried. If you think this is too easy, a crazed birthday boy begins evaporating everyone in sight following them around. Craziness ensues.

It is hard to put in words how original this film is after all there isn't a word for super-original is there (archetype maybe)? It is a monument to creativity and worth finding. Although, some of my friends began getting bored with it a little after an hour in, probably because it is in black & white and has musical elements to it. Ingredients which usually turn off the majority of film-goers. It is so off the walls it can't possibly appeal to a large audience, I do think a lot of the indie film crowds would enjoy at least appreciating it for one viewing. I can't say enough about how original this film was and how I missed seeing it for the 8 years or so it has been out. Quite possibly the most original film ever made.

Here is the link to what imdb has to say. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243759/

Here are a few quotes I found.

Old Man: Hey. Is it just me, or do my balls itch?
Samuel Curtis: I think it's you.
Old Man: Good. For a minute, I thought my balls itched.

[open mic comedy before the dance-off]
Old Man: So this guy walks into a bar and he says to the bartender, "Can I use your phone?" The bartender says, "Sure." So he wipes his ass on it and the bar - What? Ah, ****. I just told you the punchline. Been telling this joke so ****in' long, I knew I'd **** it up.
Old Man: So there's this man, and he lived his whole life on Earth, and his name was Mr. Stevenson. When Mr. Stevenson was eight years old, he asked another little boy if he would like a Hurts Donut. The other boy said yes. So he hit him on the arm and he said, "Hurts Donut." Five years later, Mr. Stevenson asked another boy about his same age at that time if he would like a Hurts Donut. when the boy said yes, Mr. Stevenson stabbed him over and over again in his eye and his cheek with a pencil, saying "Hurts Donut." Over the years, Mr. Stevenson did very well in school. On graduation day, he was sat next to another young man, who, like Mr. Stevenson, had earned high marks. When he asked the boy if he would like a Hurts Donut, the boy said, "Not if you're gonna stab me in the eye with a pencil." "I wouldn't even touch you," said Mr. Stevenson. So when the boy agreed, he presented him with a photograph of the young man's fiancée at a bachelor party, on some guy's table, ****ing herself with a beer bottle. As tears filled the young man's eyes, Mr. Stevenson was heard to say, "Hurts Donut." A few years later, Mr. Stevenson got a job as a sales clerk in an electronics store. Within a year, he was caught stealing and immediately incarcerated. When he asked his cellmate if he would like a Hurts Donut, his cellmate said yeah. So... he gave him a Hurts Donut. Over the years, Mr. Stevenson grew too old to take care of himself, so they put him in a hospital. [audience begins laughing hysterically] One day, he asked the new nurse if she would like a Hurts Donut. In anticipation of her response, Mr. Stevenson began humming and making smacking noises with his mouth. When the nurse smiled and said, "I know about you, Mr. Stevenson," Mr. Stevenson blurted out something totally incoherent and... and began to laugh.
[the bar patrons continue laughing uproariously]
Old Man: I've never understood this joke. But then, I've never been to Earth.

[describing the source of his fame to a planet solely inhabited by male miners]
The Boy Who Actually Saw a Woman's Breast: It was round and soft. Now go back to work.

Lee Vilensky: You will all partake in fresh fruit, brought here by the Blueberry Pirate himself. And I will partake in fresh fruit and sexual intercourse, an act in which we are all a stranger, but which, upon my return, I will describe to you in great detail.

Go watch it. One last attempt to categorize this film, it is somewhere between Eraserhead & The Wall. But, with the sort of sense of humor you have in dreams, a sly confidence everything will be alright because after all you are responsible for everything right?

Harold and Maude. It's a must see cult classic with Cat Stevens tunes throughout.
