Wow you go to sleep and when you wake up some one has started a movement with you as leader and before anything happens some one else has started a counter movement and the first movement is destroyed.

For a moment of serious discussion here after all the giant sized smileys used in this thread don't you guys ever question the need for smileys? No one on this board has ever been a smiley abuser except for that guy who was obsessed with the oscars, yet I still question why we need to use them at all. I mean do you ever read a novel and think "hey you know Conrad really could have heightened this novel if after "the horror, the horror" he had added an angry smiley face to help me understand Kurtz's feelings.". It's not that I hate smileys, but at the end of the day they seem a little unecessary.

This isn't Heart of Darkness, though, this is a casual discussion forum. We are not professional writers (that I know of), and expecting us to live up to those rather lofty goals is unrealistic. Smileys help make up for the limitations of the medium; that is, the loss of voice inflections and nonverbal communication. Plus, they're fun.

Of course I don't expect members of the forum to live up to professional writing standards, but humans have used written language as a means of communication for centuries. Now with a new age of txt messaging and the internet we have smileys, they seem to me to be a new form of laziness. As for the idea that they convey emmotions well I just think that is a rather lacking reason, I mean the simplistic emotions conveyed in smileys are easily portrayed by any literate person through writing.

As to them being fun well sure use them in that case, but I'll continue with text.

Again..I cite the case of R*servoir K*tty..who couldn't write a three word sentence without a row of smileys after it....
