I was wondering if any of you guys/gals are outdoorspeople... Do you hunt or fish or anything of that nature?
I don't do much fishing, but I do a lot of hunting. I hunt waterfowl (ducks/geese), pheasants, and deer. I just went out duck hunting this morning...didn't get anything besides rained on This weekend is a big weekend though because it's deer season!!! |

Does this count ? we are avid clam diggers, yes that's right we stalk the wild clam, complete with clam guns dag nabit. I am not such a good clam digger however and usually stand around and hold the bags and the extra clam gun whilst Mr. Oz does the digging.
And also we do a bit of surf fishing. We are real outdoors people though and go camping and hiking all times of the year.

I love fishing. Been doin it since I was 4 years old. During the spring and summer I try to fish as much as possible. Which is sometimes 3 or 4 times a week. I mainly fish for Smallmouth Bass on the Delaware river and another smaller river near me. But I do do quite a bit of night fishing for Catfish and Carp as well. I hardly ever keep anything I catch. I prefer to just get a picture and let them go.
And no offense, but how can you shoot ducks??? Theyre such beautiful animals and their meat is gross. Shooting an animal like a duck is sort of sadistic. Plus, If you saw what incredibly dirty animals they are, most people would think twice about eating them.

I do take offense. All of the animals I shoot are beautiful. The part I take offense of is saying its sadistic. There's nothing sadistic about hunting. Man has been hunting since the dawn of time. Its not as easy as people think either. Animals are a lot smarter than people give them credit. Its a challenging sport that hunters put a lot of time and money into and its incredibly enjoyable. To be outdoors bonding with nature and also with your fellow hunters. Ducks do not live incredibly dirty. I watch and observe nature all the time and I don't see them at all as dirty. Cows are a lot dirtier and most people don't have a problem eating a hamburger. I never waste any of the meat I obtain (and I think duck tastes just fine). I think a hunted animal dies much more humanely than an animal that lives on a commercial farm and dies in a slaughterhouse. |

See I never understood the hunter's mentality. If you find an animal beautiful, why would you want to kill it? Im not some crazy animal rights activist by any means. I just dont get it. I mean, shooting deer I understand. Their numbers are way too high. And most people find their meat very good (I personally think its gross) to eat. But for instance....My father-in-law hunts, and he and his gun club buddies go and buy pheasants, let them go on their land, and then come back a few hours later and hunt them. What the hell is up with that??? Its not even fair anymore lol. Im sorry if I offended you. I have ducks as pets and I just cant imagine someone wanting to shoot them. And trust me, ducks that live in captivity are filthy.

I don't hunt anything that lives in captivity. The reason why you don't understand is because you've never been hunting before. You go fishing...don't you think the fish you catch are beautiful? And speaking of meat that is gross....carp? All you can do with it is smoke it. |

There's a real life incident of Stephen King's that he incorporated into one of his novels. When he was a boy he was given an air rifle as a present and wanted to go out and shoot something. His dad took him hunting for squirrels. He saw one..shot it..it fell out the tree..he ran over all excited and then looked down at this small, fluffy, Disney-esque little animal..twitching in it's death throws..oozing blood..and all the fleas on it's body jumping off their host. He said it put him off hunting for life.

One is reminded, dear boy, of Oscar Wilde's line about "the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable."
