David Fincher has finally finished principal photography on his first movie since Panic Room in 2002, and epic that follows the investigation of the investigation of the infamous (and still unsolved) "Zodiac" killer murders in San Francisco in the late '60s and early '70s.
Jake Gyllenhall plays Robert Graysmith, a cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle who took an interest in the case, began an amateur investigation, and wrote the book upon which the film is partially based. Robert Downey Jr. plays Paul Avery, the reporter who covered the investigation for the Chronicle. Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards play the SF police detectives that investigated the crimes. The film is currently slated for release some time in January.

From the shots i've seen, this looks pretty good. Although, it runs the risk of being another Se7en...

I'm sure that comparisons are inevitable since the two movies share the serial killer investigation plot. From what I have read, though, this movie is much more elaborate than Seven. It covers three decades and one version of the shooting script apparently ran nearly 200 pages.
Incidentally, Fincher shot this movie on DV using the same equipment that Michael Mann has used on Collateral and Miami Vice.

The cinematographer is one Mr. Harris Savides. I've not seen Last Days, but it looks like he hasn't used such equipment before...

I've anxiously awaiting this one! January sounds good, birthday present for moi
The story of The Zodiac killer has always intrigued me. Watched things like "Unsolved Mysteries" on him and was just glued to the television. It amazes me that they couldn't figure out who he was, with all the intelligent people in the police, FBI, etc, etc. Guess it shows that it's not so very hard to doup them. Kinda scary if you think about it!

I really like what he's done for Gus Van Sant on Gerry, Elephant, and Last Days. Very naturalistic-looking lighting . . . a style that should work pretty well with DV.

Well, the trailer's out. I don't know if you've seen it, but it looks worryingly light-hearted. Maybe I just dont like Gyllenhaal...

Comes out this Friday (March 2nd). The Girlfriend and I were planning on going to see this before we go to dinner and Blue Man Group but now I'm having second thoughts.
First, though, I have to say that I'm a HUGE David Fincher fan. LOVE his movies. Also, this is going to sound strange but I'm a huge fan of serial killers. I know, psycho. But what I mean is I know a lot about them and have read up on them and know quite a bit about the most famous (infamous) ones. The Zodiac's story really fascinates me. I just don't know if this movie really warranted a 160 minute running time. I'm thinking I might wait for DVD or see it on a slow weeknight.

Ya know, it would make a lot more sense if I used the Search feature BEFORE posting.
Oz, my bestest friend, could you please merge?
