Saw this yesterday...
Hollywoodland was one of those films you file under "forgettable". There were some really good parts, but overall, the film in its entirety just wasn't that memorable at all. That's what I got from it anyway. Diane Lane's character was very good if somewhat one sided with very little character development. Adrien Brody was very good, best part of the movie, in my opinion. Ben Affleck was boring permeated with moments of actual acting. The writing for Lane's and Brody's characters were fast paced and witty...very amusing. Robin Tunney, who played Reeves's fiancee was pigeon-holed as the angry, bitter, bitchy female role, which got really old, really quick. The good writing seemed to end with Lane and Brody. The music was good, fit the tone of the film, I thought. If you're a fan of Brody's, then go see the film, because he's wonderful. But combined with everything else, I'd say this film would be a good rental. ![]()

I think it was his best. But "his best" doesn't necessarily mean great.
Besides, I'm not a critic, and don't often agree with them...so there's obviously going to be a difference of opinion, you know what I mean? I just think Ben Affleck is wholly underwhelming. And I've yet to see anything that makes me think otherwise.

Yea, I'd say that's probably one of his best. Still, I just don't find him too appealing.

I must disagree. I thought Affleck was ****ing great. It's about time that guy did something ballsy again.
All those years whent he "Ben hate-on" was on (I cant blame anyone, he did some awful movies), I still always knew he had potential. He just picked really bad projects and hopped on that movie star bus, but hopefully he got straightened out. His early movies are great, and there's just something in his face that makes you believe him when he's acting. I thought the movie was pretty good. It could have been a bit shorter (a complaint I find about almost every movie I see nowadays) and the script a bit more focused, but it kept my attention. I thought everyone involved did a fantastic job, and it really intrigued the **** out of me. I didnt know anything about the Reeves murder, so I guess that helped too. But maybe it's just me, I'm a conspiracy nut. The cinematography was outstanding. Thank god the drama/"adult" season is starting at the movies now, and this was a good kickoff. GO SEE IT. There's nothing else up right now. Well, at least until Black Dahlia comes out.

King of Depew: just one comment here. Saying Affleck was good is understandable. But ballsy? Or do you just mean in comparison to his more recent films?

Yes, I mean "ballsy" in comparison to the total cheese he's done in the last few years. I thought he was great in this.
