A couple of weeks ago I went on a lunch date with a new guy. I told him that the night before I had watched The Silence of the Lambs and he sincerely asked "what's that about?" Seriously! He had no idea! He didn't even emphasize the word "about" which would imply that he'd been wondering for some time. No, he didn't emphasize any word, he was just calmly quizzical. I was shocked. He said he'd heard of it of course but he had no idea what the story was. So I gracefully recovered and I told him the basic story, and that it was a very good movie. I could understand never having seen it, but how could you not know what it was about?? Think of all the jokes and references that have gone over his ignorant head. Hoo boy.
List your most recent, or most startling encounter with movie ignorance. |

That happens all the time between me and my friends. Can't quote "Rocky" around them cause they have never seen any of them! I told them it's simply un-American.

I haven't seen any of them. I mean I've seen pieces parts of them but not more than 5 minutes of any of them. I just didn't see the point in watching them.

I liked the first Rocky but then they started to go down hill...for me it was if you've seen one you've seen them all..
But the real ignorance issue is unbelieveable..like at work at coffee break..I could mention a gozillion movies I love and people would just stare at me with a blank look on their face... The Wicker Man The Third Man Wings of Desire Beauty and the Beast...Cocteaus's of course The Red Shoes I'm sure I could keep listing movies until the cows came home and I'm know you other cineophiles must encounter this all the time too...

Almost Famous
I once shouted "Don't do drugs!" at someone and they looked at me like I was insane. God, that was embarassing.

Yeah, I've never been able to allow myself to watch the Rocky films... i can see nothing in them which I may find remotly entertaining. Also, when it comes to ignorance, I am fairly forgiving. None of my friends know jack about movies which is precisley why I joined this forum... however; I have seen some unforgivable examples during my stay on the forum, originating from Miss Kitty. She had never heard of Gandhi...
Also, non-movie related, after being given a talk from a guy at NASA, someone asked the question: "How did you know that space was actually there?" |
