Spanglish is one of the BEST movies released in the past year. Period. Every single performance was phenomenal (Sandler, Leoni, Leachman, Vega). James L. Brooks had a fantastic casting director, because each one of the roles was filled PERFECTLY. For those of you not quite sure about plot, it's a rather simple one. A family is on the rocks all over the place (psychotic wife, wimpy husband, alcoholic grandma, overweight teenager who's mother wants her to be thin) and decides to hire a maid. Paz Vega plays the non-English-speaking maid who becomes a very big part of their family. It goes as far as Paz's character (Flor) and her daughter living with the Claskies. Flor starts to learn English and slowly starts to heal the family from the inside. This is definitely a movie about the importance of family and heritage. It emphasizes the strong roles women have in our lives and how important it is to have a stable family with parents who are on the same page at it's core. It teaches about VALUES (which is VERY rare in movies today). It is a WONDERFULLY told story with laughter, tears, anger, and breakthroughs after breakthroughs. AND it has the best sandwich EVER made (OMFG!!!). There's even a segment on the DVD that shows HOW to make this UNBELIEVABLE sandwich. The outtakes are hilarious. There's a TON of stuff on the extras. I didn't get to all of them because I just rented the movie, but I definitely plan to buy it. If you think of another movie Brooks made (As Good As it Gets) you can decide whether you will like Spanglish or not. Same warm and fuzzy feelings you get from watching both films. Similar messages focusing on the good in people. This is one of my favorite Sandler movies. And, from watching interviews with him, it seems this character is the closest to his real life personality. Tea is absolutely BRILLIANT as the crazy mom. And Cloris Leachman is HYSTERICAL as the alcoholic grandma. It's been a really long time since I have seen a movie that has left me feeling so GOOD. I was hesitant to watch ANY other movie the weekend I rented Spanglish BECAUSE it made me feel so good. Excellent movie- HIGHLY recommended. Watch with a significant other. Hold hands often. This definitely redeems Sandler from that piece of sh*t Punch Drunk Love he did a while ago!
