Default Audition

Has anyone seen this movie? Directed by (excuse my spelling) Takashi Miike I believe it is...I really enjoyed this movie, this is the first movie I've seen of Miike. It was very surreal in my opinion anyone else got any opinions?

I love Audition though it totally creeped me out, and Miike is one of my favorite Japanese directors . . . though he's completely nuts. He makes so many movies that it's hard to keep up with his output even with the benefit of DVD.

Sort of . . .

It's been a while since I've seen it but . . .

Let me see if I can explain without being too graphic. I'm not sure how much of it is supposed to be "real," but it's basically a psychosexual manifestation and release of the subliminal rage female subservience mandated by Japanese culture. The "audition" is a surface that conceals Aoyama's real intent, but the deception is reciprocated by what is concealed beneath Asami's appearence of demure, very traditionally Japanese femininity.

Mmm..I've seen to catch that much but i've never really understand what was real. I watched it very late at night ...and I couldn't remmeber if I nodded off during something important because the next minute i knew everything had this surreal effect to it but I believe... I didn't miss anything.

Yeah, you may not have missed anything, there's a fracture point in the film where everything goes surreal like that, and there's nothing in the film that explains it. It's possible that that portion of the film is all a paranoid fantasy . . . or maybe not.

I've seen Ichi the Killer, Dead or Alive, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Deadly Outlaw: Rekka and Gozu.

Of these, I'd recommend The Happiness of the Katakuris, mostly because it's the most atypical and the most light-hearted. It's a musical black comedy about a family that opens an inn in the mountains only to find that they can't seem to keep their guest alive for the duration of their stay. In order to avoid the corpses ruining the business, they resort to burying them in the backyard. But that leads to a zombie problem. Meanwhile, the daughter falls in love with a Navy officer, and her lover begins to piece together what's really going on . . . but then a nearby volcano starts to rumble . . .

You certainly won't see anything remotely like it coming out of Hollywood anytime soon
