Default How do you store/organize your DVD's?

The bane of my livingroom (where the TV lives) are how to store/organize my DVD's. I likely have about 1200 - and luckily a few are boxed sets - but finding the specific DVD can be a nightmare.

I have a large wall-unit with cabinet storage. And I like my DVD's rather hidden away. I have put them spine-up in boxes. I have put them spine-out straight on the selves. I have spent hours dreaming of clear acrylic boxes of the perfect side to hold the DVD's which I could easily pull out and find the DVD I wish to view.

I have them referenced by genre. Mysteries/Film Noir Silent Film Documentaries/How To's Sci-fi/Horror ... and there are about 5 more.

But here's the thing - the cross-genres can make that difficult.

Since joining and beginning to download my DVD's I've been considering trying to go the simple alphabetical route since I can print the list.

How do you organize your DVD's for easy reference and viewing? Does anyone have spectacular DVD holder or cabinet?

I'm growing desperate as my DVD collection grows...LOL!

I personally feel straight alphabetical is the only way to go, it gets way way too confusing otherwise. Although I do have a strictly Film Noir section in the beginning of the F's, because I have a couple box sets that are just noirs, but everything else is alphabetical.

We have a floor to ceiling bookcase, that for now holds all of them, straight up, spine out.

You will have to build a new room Asta, for all of yours.

I have my dvds in a way that only I can understand. I have a shelf of my favorites and the rest just randomly stacked, but I know the order I stack them and can find the one I'm looking for in no time flat. I really should alphabetize them because it drives people nuts who come over to borrow one.

Mine are organized so that they're all in the same general vicinity. That's about it.

I'm currently keeping mine in 2 bookshelves, although I've outgrown my most recent one and have started stacking them on top, and with a height-challenged person such as myself, it's no easy task getting them down.

I originally did it by genre, but with movies that could fit into several different genres, it got difficult when my brothers came over to borrow them. I stack mine upright only because I can fit more that way on the shelves I have, and I chose cabinets with closing doors. A pain in the ass to put together, but they look really nice, you can lock the cabinet, and it also hides them, and it just looks like a nice piece of furniture that takes up little space.

After organizing them by genres failed me, I went to alphabetical. It seemed to take forever, but it was worth it. Now, when I buy new dvd's, I just insert the new one alphabetically and slide over the rest.

Don't see the point in catagorizing DVD's by genre..it gets too confusing. What's 'Spaceballs'? comedy or Sci fi? What's 'Shaun of the Dead'? Horror or comedy? What's 'The One'?? Sci Fi or martial arts??

Just file them in strict alphabetical order...easy peasy. You can lay your hand on any title you want...as long as your not dyslexic!

There is no other way. Once we thought about by Directors or Actors or genre, but that doesn't work at all, especially the genre, then we would never agree on if it was comedy/horror/adventure etc. as Charlie pointed out too.

But we still have problems, well the H does, sometimes I'll find something like This is Spinal Tap in the S section. Or A Dirty Shame, I think that is an A movie not an D movie.

I think any big movie buffs who have enough movies to catalogue them according to genre have all tried the genre method, and eventually go with alphabetical, regardless.

I think with movies starting with "A" or "The" you have to go by the first letter of the next word. Otherwise you're going to have a million movies in the "T" section for movies like The Sandlot, The Departed, The Godfather, etc.

Oh I agree you have to drop the The, but I just figured like A Dirty Shame it was part of the name more so than just The. The other example I was thinking of was It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, it has to go under I. But I am always finding it with the M's.
