Supposedly Leather face was based after the serial killer Ed Gein, very loosely in my opinion. Ed Gein would kill women and much like Buffalo Bill skin them as he was making a "woman suit". He often dreamed of being a woman. Ed Gein also inspired my favorite movie killer Norman Bates in the infamous Psycho. Ed Gein had a very close relationship with his mother even though she verbally abused him on numerous occasions ( i know i didn't spell that right). Go to the site for more accurate facts on Ed Gein

Gein wasn't a serial killer...he was a necrophile..he dug up bodies and mutilated them. He only actually murdered one woman...mind you he did then gut and skin her!
There is a fantastic film..that sticks fairly rigidly to the real story of Gein. Starring Steve Railsback as Gein it's called 'Ed Gein' (aka 'By The Light Of The Moon') and shows a more factual and less 'hack and slash' version of his exploits http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0230169/

I thought it was more than one woman..I thought it was like 2 or 3...still probably correct that he doesn't deserve the title of serial killer.
He admitted to killing Mrs. Worden... and Mary Hogan

Yes...but no more than about 2 killings were ever officially accredited to Gein. 90% of the body parts found in his house were from women who had been dead a while and he had dug up and mutilated.I think he got a bum deal being labelled this horrendous 'serial kiler' and being identified as the basis for people like 'Buffalo Bill', 'Leatherface' and 'Norm Bates'...

Yeah I took back my "Serial killer" comment..come to think of it I remember the first time researching him that he had few kills under his belt..in comparison to serial killers.
"I think he got a bum deal being labelled this horrendous 'serial kiler' and being identified as the basis for people like 'Buffalo Bill', 'Leatherface' and 'Norm Bates'..." I think the "real" serial killers got the bum deal because in the end they want to be the most notorious don't they? And he's definitely inspired alot.

psh.....to say i was sorely dissappointed in that movie was a huge understatment comparing that to the texas chainsaw massacre......that is when i learned the difference between "based on a true story" and "inspired by a true story ![]()

Personally I think Gein's story is the far more un-nerving and disturbing.. It really happened! Leatherface's exploits were just an exploitative horror movie...which would never have been made had it not been for Gein's real activities. What were you expecting in 'Ed Gein'...a slasher movie? Some hick psycho running round in a woman's skin hacking up teens with a chainsaw?

Sorry mate! I was going to put 'red neck' but wasn't sure if that would be approprite..or even correct. Seeing as he was in the middle of nowhere I thought 'hick' would suffice. But I wouldn't want to besmirch the good name of all you genuine 'hicks'...So I take it back and re-write my comment: What were you expecting in 'Ed Gein'...a slasher movie? Some 'urbanly challenged', in-bred, stiff-shagging, psycho bumpkin running round in a woman's skin hacking up teens with a chainsaw Better?
