Prior to the Terry Gilliam movie, Hunter S. Thompson had put the Fear and Loathing movie rights in the hands of a girlfriend. She was approached by animator Ralph Bakshi, who wanted to do an adaptation as a feature-length animated movie, in the tradition of Ralph Steadman's illustrations from the book. Instead, she opted for the bigger live-action Terry Gilliam Hollywood movie. This Hunter S. Thompson Bat Country Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas t-shirt was inspired by Johnny Depp's version in the movie.
